Doppler and modulation tomography of XTE J 1118 + 480 in quiescence

چکیده
We present Doppler and modulation tomography of the X-ray nova XTE J1118+480 with data obtained during quiescence using the 10-m Keck II telescope. The hot spot where the gas stream hits the accretion disc is seen in Hα, Hβ, He i λ5876, and Ca ii λ8662, thus verifying the presence of continued mass transfer within the system. The disc is clearly seen in Hα and Ca ii λ8662. We image the mass-donor star in narrow absorption lines of Na I λλ5890, 5896, 8183, 8195 and Ca ii λ8662, implying an origin from the secondary itself rather than the interstellar medium. We also detect deviations in the centroid of the double peak of Hα akin to those found by Zurita et al. 2002 suggesting disc eccentricity.

Mmt Observations of the Black Hole Candidate Xte J1118+480 near and in Quiescence
We report on the analysis of new and previously published MMT optical spectra of the black hole binary XTE J1118+480 during the decline from the 2000 outburst to true quiescence. From crosscorrelation with template stars, we measure the radial velocity of the secondary to derive a new spectroscopic ephemeris. The observations acquired during approach to quiescence confirm the earlier reported m...
متن کاملThe 2005 outburst of the halo black hole X - ray transient XTE
We present optical and infrared monitoring of the 2005 outburst of the halo black hole X-ray transient XTE J1118+480. We measured a total outburst amplitude of ∼ 5.7±0.1 mag in the R band and ∼ 5 mag in the infrared J, H and K s bands. The hardness ratio HR2 (5-12 keV/3-5 keV) from the RXTE/ASM data is 1.53±0.02 at the peak of the outburst indicating a hard spectrum. Both the shape of the light...
متن کاملDiscovery of a 0 . 08 Hz QPO in the power spectrum of black hole candidate XTE J 1118 + 480
We found a strong QPO feature at 0.085 ± 0.002 Hz in the power spectrum of an X-ray transient XTE J1118+480. The QPO was detected in PCA/RXTE data with an amplitude close to 10% rms, and width 0.034 ± 0.006 Hz. The shape of the power spectrum is typical for black hole candidates: almost flat at frequencies lower than 0.03 Hz, roughly a power law with slope ∼1.2 from 0.03 to 1 Hz, with steepenin...

متن کاملULTRACAM observations of the black hole X - ray transient XTE J 1118 + 480 in quiescence
We present high time-resolution multicolour observations of the quiescent soft X-ray transient XTEJ1118+480 obtained with ULTRACAM. Superimposed on the double-humped continuum g ′ and i -band lightcurves are rapid flare events which typically last a few minutes. The power density spectrum of the lightcurves can be described by a broken power–law model with a break frequency at ∼2mHz or a power–...
